Day 2: No Time to Die
Also this day we have make an early bird move at 6:00 to be on time for a ferry 50 km further.
We take the Eysturoyar till tunnel under the sea floor. We did not pass any car over the total length of 11 km. We did a full round on the roundabout deep under the see. The tunnel splits here.
Kalsoy lighthouse
At the ferry a Welsh lady , who is already travelling for 5 weeks at the faroer island , informs us about a general strike at the islands. No public transport. And no shops open after today. Be prepared!
The ferry brings us from the second city of the island, Klaksvik, to the island Kalsoy.
There are a hand full settlements on the island. We drive till the end of the island. The roads passes very narrow tunnels (only 2,6 m width). With many small spots to pass a car coming from the other side. A claustrofobic experience in those dark tunnels
There is a world famous walk to the Lighthouse if Kalsoy. The main goal of today.
The cliffs are 100-200 m high above the ocean, an you have to walk over a small path with cliffs on both sides to get the best view.
Hundreds of birds are circling in front of the main cliff in the back of the Lighthouse. A wonderful view!
Time for contemplation and lunch!
I am the one who actually worked for Tate&Lyle. But my brother joined ones a 10 miles run from Amsterdam to zaandam, when i was working there for this company and we were participating as a team in this run. Apparently, it remained one of the only sportshirts my brother acquired in all those years. The dropping is out of his comfort zone in many angles.
A special mark in the landscape. The grave of James Bond. In the movie No Time to Die, James apparently died here. As soon as the movie was released, the farmer who owns the land decided to place the grave stone. As a reference to the movie, with some commercial intentions as well. As this hike is a paid one as well.
The proper function of man is to live not to exist, says the stone. It is becomes the tagline if this trip.
Cape Enniberg
We have to return in time to take the ferry back to prevent a forced night in the island Kalsoy. There is a basic camp site to do so. But we prefer to do another hike that day, 25 km more north.
Cape Enniberg is third highest summit of the faroer. And is should give a marvellous overview over the fjords.
However, today the summit is hidden in the clouds. So we only walk till we touch the clouds and return to the village. We still have to drive another hour to reach our final destination of the day.
Eiði Camping
When we approaches Eidi, the sun wins the battle with the clouds. We end the day with a blue sky and warm sunshine.
Eidi camping is a (former) football field. The former canteen became the camping building. The showers are still the common showers in a football dressing room. One for every team.
The caravans are located on the football field. We can place our tent near the lake. A brilliant place for a Belgian beer.
